The quiet power of tending to what matters most

This season, even in the dry high desert, I start to see the signs of Spring. Tiny green shoots, the return of the hummingbirds from the South, a longer light. Spring reminds me of the quiet power of tending. Not rushing, not overhauling—just paying attention. Giving steady care to what truly matters.

In my work with leaders and teams, I’ve noticed that so much of what we call “overwhelm” is really a disconnection from purpose. We’re busy, reactive, and stretched thin. But when we pause to ask what actually matters here?—something shifts. Energy returns. Clarity emerges.

This month, I’m inviting you (and myself) to slow down and tend to what’s essential.

The Quiet Power of Tending

In leadership, there’s often pressure to move fast, fix things, stay ahead. But sometimes, the most powerful move a leader can make is to stop—and tend.

Tending isn’t about control. It’s about care. It’s about asking: What in this moment needs my attention, my presence, my intention?

I recently worked with a leadership team that was moving at a breakneck pace—checking boxes, pushing initiatives forward, but losing their sense of connection. When we paused and surfaced the question, What are we actually here to tend?, their answers surprised them:

“Our culture”

“Our people’s sense of safety”

“Our shared why”

That conversation changed everything. They slowed down. They started listening more deeply. They made space for reflection, not just reaction. And from that space, better ideas—and more trust—began to grow.

When we tend what matters, we lead from a deeper place. We create conditions for health, resilience, and renewal—not just for ourselves, but for everyone we serve.

Reflection Questions for You (or Your Team)

These are powerful prompts for journaling, team check-ins, or quiet walks in the woods:

What part of your work or life is quietly asking for more care right now?

What have you been tolerating or overlooking that needs tending?

Where are you confusing busyness with meaningful progress?

If you could tend just one thing with your full heart this month, what would it be?

What’s already thriving—and just needs steady care to keep going?
